How is this book different to all the other learn to play guitar books? Learn Guitar 4 Kids is specially developed for young children of about 6 to 9 years old. Most learn to play guitar books, even those written for children, progress too quickly and are too complicated for the young beginners. Other books also require a high level of reading ability. Learn Guitar 4 Kids uses large diagrams and few words. Learn Guitar 4 Kids also includes activity pages where children can write or color in the answers. This provides variety in the learning and reinforces the lessons.

How old does a child have to be to learn to play guitar? There is no exact age, however by the age of 6 they should have the dexterity and concentration to be able to learn to play the guitar.
Should I get an acoustic or electric guitar for my child? Buy a small classical guitar, either half or three quarter size with nylon strings. Electric guitars are too heavy for small children and acoustic guitars have steel strings that will hurt their fingers.
What equipment will I need? All you need to get started is a guitar and a pick (oh and maybe some color pencils!). Before too long you might also want to get a tuner and a metronome.
What you will not get: It takes some time to become a guitar hero, so one of the things you will not get is instant success. Like any instrument, learning to play the guitar takes time and practise for any beginner. It can be particularly difficult for younger beginners to play guitar chords, so chords are not included in the book. Guitar tabs can be useful in some situations but this book is built on playing the guitar by reading music notation so guitar tabs are also not used. This age group are visual learners so they also will not have to struggle through long text passages.

The question as to whether an acoustic guitar or an electric guitar is better is a matter of personal preference and the style of music being played. The size of the child who wants to play guitar is also very important. There are actually two types of non electric guitar, acoustic guitars and classical guitars. Acoustic guitars have steel strings and classical guitars have nylon strings. If you are thinking of a guitar for a beginner, here are a few ideas for you to consider:
The easiest and best way to tune a guitar is to use an electronic tuner. Tuners are available either in chromatic or guitar formats, both of these are OK though the guitar format is generally less expensive and will ensure you tune to the correct note. The strings of a guitar are tuned to the notes E A D B G E from lowest to highest. Some tuners will also indicate the number of the string. The numbers run from the highest string to the lowest string, so the first string is the highest E string, the second string is B and so on.
Tune each string in turn by playing the string and turning the corresponding tuning peg until the needle on the tuner settles in the middle of the dial. If the string is too loose it will sound flat and the needle will fall on the left of the dial. Turnthe tuning peg to tighten the string until the needle sits in the middle of the dial. Repeat for the other strings until they are all in tune.
Guitars should have their tuning checked frequently, particularly when they are new or have new strings as the strings tend to stretch to begin with.
Replace the guitar strings one at a time. In other words, take one string off and put the new one on before you proceed to removing the next string. This is because the strings create a lot of tension on the neck of the guitar, and you do not want to remove all the tension at once. When you have removed each string, rub a pencil in each slot in the nut. This will allow your string to move within the slot smoothly and tune evenly.
Insert the new string:Put the string (make sure it is the right one) through the appropriate bridge hole or through the opening in the back of the guitar. Pull the string through to the headstock of the guitar. Make sure the string is resting in the correct saddle and groove in the nut.
Cut the new string to length:Guitar strings are longer than they need to be and so need to be cut. Ask your teacher to show you how to cut the string about 9cm past the post. Another way is to match it to the length of the old guitar string.
Put the string onto the tuning post:Bend the end of string at a right angle about 2 cm from the end and put the end of the guitar string all the way into the hole in the middle of the tuning post. Begin winding the guitar string on to the post. Make sure you are winding it on to the correct side of the post so that the string does not bend as it crosses the nut.
Wind it up:Each wind should go under the previous one, closer to the headstock, the string should not overlap itself. Winding the guitar string downward pulls the string more tightly over the nut. This is important because the point at which the string crosses the nut is where the string vibrates from, so you want it to be firm. Somewhere between two and a half to three and a half times around the post is OK. Repeat this with the other guitar strings one at a time.
Tuning:Tune the strings using your tuner. Make sure you do not go too far or the strings might snap. Tune (lowest pitch to highest) your guitar to E A D G B E and you will be ready to play.
